Arts Council Silicon Valley, in partnership with the Triton Museum of Art located at 1505 Warburton Avenue in Santa Clara, presents a two-month exhibit for the Ceramic and Glass Visual Arts Recipients of the Arts Council Silicon Valley’s 2005 Artist Fellowship. The San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, 520 South First Street in San Jose presents “Art Quilts and America during the 1960s and 1970s” – A slide lecture with Dr. Sandra Sider. Dr. Sider’s lecture will discuss how American art quilts evolved in the turbulent decades of the 1960s and 1970s, especially in relation to contemporary politics and space-age materials. Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley presents Shakespeare’s timeless testament to the power of love – “Romeo and Juliet” - combining all the beauty, humor, adventure and tragedy of the frightening urgency of youth is danced to the brilliant and emotive score of Sergei Prokofiev. Dennis Nahat’s theatrically intimate choreography grips the senses and compels us once again, to believe in love at first sight. “Romeo and Juliet” plays only at San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. March 11 – Saturday
The South Bay Guitar Society presents its 2nd Guitar Solo & Ensemble Festival. Held at the Historic Hoover Theatre, 1635 Park Avenue, this event will deliver an afternoon of classical guitar mini (15 minute) recitals, lectures, exhibits and demonstrations. It’s a great opportunity to learn about a most beautiful and expressive performing art form, meet with guitar students, teachers and professional musicians. Talented guitar makers will be available to demonstrate their creations and explain their craft.

March 17 – Friday
Bagpipes in San Pedro Square for St. Patrick’s Day: The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Pipes and Drums will be entertaining from 6 – 9 p.m. in San Pedro Square and throughout the downtown San Jose area. Featured establishments are: The Tied House, O’Flaherty’s Irish Pub and Britannia Arms.
Following the San Pedro Square appearances, the band will perform at the King’s Head Pub in downtown Campbell at 10 p.m.The band consists of volunteers from the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department and peace officers from neighboring police departments. For more information, visit the website: http://www.lenihan.org/lgpb .

The Kentucky-based, folk roots duo, “Wishing Chair,” will be appearing at the Congregational Community Church of Campbell, 400 West Campbell Avenue, in Campbell, for a concert benefiting the Yout Science Institute classroom Summer camp scholarships. The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) Philharmonic Orchestra, now in its 54th season, will perform its Spring Concert, Harmonious Collaborations, at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in San Jose at 2:30 p.m. The concert will feature one of the first side-by-side concerts with the SJYS Philharmonic Orchestra, Avant Flute Choir and Percussion Ensemble performing “Mars” from “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. Also featured is a performance of Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 2” by Kenric Tam, co-winner of the 2005 Young Artist Competition. The third piece on the program will feature Joseph Chun, second winner of the 2005 Young Artist Competition, performing Antonin Dvorak’s “Concerto for Cello” and “Orchestra in B minor, Op. 104”. March 11 – April 8
West Valley Light Opera Association will open its second production of its 41st Season, “Once Uopon A Mattress” at the Saratoga Civic Theater, 13777 Fruitvale in Saratoga with an 8 p.m., champagne gala performance. Weekend performances will continue through the second Saturday in April. Directed by Jeff M. San Jose Repertory Theatre is pleased to present the Bay Area premiere of Rolin Jones’ comedy “The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow: An Instant Message with Excitable Music.” Directed by Kim Rubenstein, This quirky techno-comedy centers on 22-year-old Jennifer Marcus, (Sue Jean Kim) a brilliant, yet obsessive-compulsive, agoraphobic woman and her quest to find her Chinese birth mother with the help of a robotic version of herself, dubbed Jenny Chow. This show is presented as a co-production with Portland Center Stage. Written and directed by California Theatre Center’s Resident Director, Will Huddleston, “The Life and Times of Ben Franklin” focuses on Ben Franklin’s accomplishments as a youth and a young man, and leads up to his vital role in the American Revolution. The Tabard Theatre presents “The Magicians Nephew” the prequel to “The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe” in C.S. Lewis’ beloved series “The Chronicles Of Narnia.” Follow young Digory and his friend Polly as magical rings transport them to enchanted Narnia and wicked Charn where they meet Aslan the great lion and Jadis the evil queen. Audition sign up for the California Youth Symphony has started for all CYS ensembles, encompassing eight programs for all symphonic instruments, from beginning to advanced levels, for musicians of high school age and younger. Registration deadline is March 22, but applicants are strongly encouraged to sign up early. Auditions will take place at Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Rd., Los Altos Hills, in April. Westmont High School, 4805 Westmont Avenue in Campbell presents “Sugar!” The musical version of the hilarious film, “Some Like It Hot!” Set in 1929, this fun-filled musical comedy follows two guys who disguise themselves as girls to outrun a bunch of tap dancing gangsters. Dressed as dames, Joe as Josephine and Jerry as Daphne, join an all girl band.  Joe falls for Sugar, the lead singer in the band which leads to all sorts of zany mix-ups. Reserved Seating. German Language Classes!. South Bay Deutscher Schulverein, a German-Language Saturday School, offers German language instructions at the Willow Glen Educational Park, Middle School Section, 2001 Cottle Avenue, CA 95125. March 10 – 12
South Valley Civic Theatre announces auditions for “Annie.” Fri auditions held at 7 p.m., Sat. auditions are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Check-in is 30 minutes prior to audition time. Call-backs are scheduled for 1 p.m. Sun as needed. All auditions will be held at the SVCT Warehouse, 8565 Monterey Road in Gilroy. All roles are open for adults and youth (ages 8 and up) Come prepared to sing a song of your choosing (preferably not from this show). A piano accompanist will be provided. (A CD/tape player will also be available.) You will be taught a short dance routine, so wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You may be asked to read a selection from the script. Irrigation Systems for the Homeowner: Are you tired of raveling and unraveling your hose, or is your current irrigation system failing? Join Derek McKee, of Beals Alliance, Inc and the Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens in this introductory irrigation class to save time and money, while keeping your plants adequately hydrated all year long. The class hours are from 6 – 8 p.m. and will include information on irrigation basics, irrigation materials, system set-up, design and layout, use zones, water conservation and controllers and operations. The workshop will be held at the new Guadalupe River Park & Gardens Visitor & Education Center, 438 Coleman Avenue. The Campbell Branch of Santa Clara County Library will host “Poemcrazy”, a poetry writing workshop,cat 6:30 pm.  This two hour program will be presented by author and poet Susan G. Wooldridge, whose book “Poemcrazy: freeing your life with words,” published in 1996, is on the New York Public Library List of Outstanding Books for Teens.  Susan is a twenty-year veteran poet/teacher with “California Poets in the Schools” as well as with adults, teachers and youth-at-risk.  This program is sponsored by the California Center for the Book, Poets & Writers Inc., and the Friends of the Campbell Public Library. Sierra Club’s Guadalupe Group meeting: “NAIL vs. Lexington Watershed Logging” - San Jose Water Company plans selective logging in its Lexington watershed along and above Los Gatos Creek. Watershed residents will discuss these plans and their concerns at Sierra Club’s Guadalupe Group meeting, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Library Community Room, on Saratoga Ave. at Fruitvale in Saratoga. The public is invited; and refreshments are served—bring your own cup to reduce paper/plastic waste.

March 23 – Thursday
Salam Pax, the “Baghdad Blogger,” who attracted a worldwide readership with his daily accounts of life under Saddam Hussein and during the invasion by the US-led forces, makes his first visit to an American college when he comes to San Jose State University for two free events sponsored by the Student Union, Inc. and the Center for Literary Arts of SJSU: 12 noon: Conversation and extended public Q&A, with book signing at the Dr. Martin Luther King Library (co-sponsor of this event), 4th St. & San Fernando St., San Jose, 2nd Floor Meeting Rooms 225-229.

Metro Pooch, 241 East Campbell Avenue in downtown Campbell, will be hosting a Pet Adoption Fair (HSSV partnered) from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. The Humane Society will bring by some special pets for adoption consideration. All animals are spayed/neutered and behavior tested, micro-chipped, and vaccinated.

StrollerPower! Ongoing outdoor exercise and fitness program now enrolling for moms with stroller-age children focusing on endurance, toning, and core bodywork in a social atmosphere designed for moms. Program consists of 60 min. progressive workouts up to three times per week at the Los Gatos Creek Trail and Campbell Park.
