Campbell, San Jose West Rotary announces speech contest winners

Leah Karlins, a senior at Branham High School, captured first place among six contestants in the Campbell, San Jose West Rotary Club’s annual high school speech competition held recently at the club’s EMQ headquarters meeting site.

One of the most popular club events, “the competition drew six very strong competitors and the judging is always tough,” said Dr. Susan Klear, the club’s contest chair. Karlins will go on to compete in an Area Assembly of four Rotary Clubs. The winner of that event will participate in the Rotary District’s Conference later this year.

Finishing up in second position was Anna Myers, a junior at Del Mar High School. Other contestants were Azra Crnogorcevis, senior at Prospect; Tony Santana, a junior at Leigh; and Katie Johnson, a junior at Westmont HS. All contestants received a cash prize for participating.

A strong audience supported the student contestants including high school principals, speech and debate teachers and Rhonda Farber, superintendent, Campbell Union High School, who has been a staunch supporter of the contest over the years.
