Do you think that presidential candidate John Edwards’ wife Elizabeth’s news about her cancer recurrence will affect his viability as a candidate?
(Asked at the Campbell PW)

“No, I think it can affect him personally, but I think he can still separate the two. He can still be committed to running a country as well as caring for his wife. But, it won’t be easy.”

“I would imagine it would make voters more sentimental with him and his family. Emotional factors will play into the vote.”

“Yes, because he will be torn between supporting her and spending time away from her tending to his campaign.”

Cheryl Lewis, 44

“I’m not too sure how it will affect his campaign. I think it could either give him sympathy votes, or if her condition worsens force him to drop out.”

Victoria Banks

“I don’t think he’s viable [to begin with]. I don’t think it will have any affect on him because I don’t think he has a chance.”

Robert Haynie, 77

“I think it will affect him, but I don’t think he should have chosen to leave [the campaign]. I think some people in the country think he should withdraw, but his supporters think he should go ahead anyway. There’s a slim chance he’ll go anywhere.”

“Not as far as I’m concerned, but yes there will be people against it either way.”

“No, I think it’s helped him make more news. It’s given his campaign more ‘notoriety’ in the news.”

“Yes, I would think it will affect things because of his emotional stability if he has to deal with it if it turns out bad and he has to be with her more than his job.”
