Singing D.J. Gary Carnes to perform at Campbell Legion Hall

Popular Singing D.J. Gary Carnes will entertain members and guests of West Valley Memory Post 99, The American Legion, in his third local appearance on Friday, April 8.

Gary Carnes

Carnes will perform his unique brand of vocalizations in the Post Clubroom at 1344 Dell Ave., Campbell, following a gala Happy Hour from 5 to 6 p.m. and optional barbecue beef dinner from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Post 99 Building Operations Manager Earle Wigham said the last two “Gary Carnes Nights” were remarkable successes, and he is looking forward to presenting him again.

“Gary Carnes will entertain us from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.,” Wigham added. “Any of you who have been at the post for Gary’s previous appearance know how talented be is. Come join us!”

Carnes learned to square dance in 1971. Three years later, he picked up a microphone for the first time (at an amateur caller’s night) and has been calling ever since. In the past 29 years he has called at numerous festivals and hundreds of dances throughout the Western United States, Canada and Mexico.

Carnes has called for several square dance clubs in the Santa Clara Valley over the years, and currently calls for Rafter Rockers and Outlaws. He has taught classes all the years he’s been calling, having taught literally hundreds of people to square dance. He is a member of the American Caller’s Association, and is licensed by B.M.I. and A.S.C.P. for the use of copyrighted music.

Dinner reservations, while not required, are encouraged to ensure that there is enough to go around. Reservations for the $6.95 dinner may be made by telephone at the clubroom, (408) 374-5597.

West Valley Memory Post 99, an all-volunteer club, has 746 members, most of them in the South Bay Area. Congress chartered The American Legion in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help and wartime veterans’ organization. A community service organization that now numbers nearly three million members—men and women—in nearly 15,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. These posts are organized into 55 departments—one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.

Barbershop Harmony Society Convention to be held April 9 at Heritage Theater

Approximately 500 attendees are expected to descend upon Campbell’s Heritage Theater on April 9 for the 2005 Northern California Division Barbershop Harmony Convention.

The competition will start at noon and will feature 16 barbershop quartets and 11 choruses all from the Northern California area. In addition there will be impromptu quartets sharing the joy of singing throughout the day. Following the day’s formal events, many of the participants will be attending an “afterglow” party at the Sonoma Chicken Coop in downtown Campbell.

The convention is sponsored by the Barbershop Harmony Society, which was founded in 1938 to preserve this form of a cappella music. The society has over 30,000 member and 839 chapters and is the largest all-men singing society in the world. It also has 12 chapters in the Bay Area.

Anyone interested in learning more about the hobby or anyone who just enjoys listening to the music can purchase a ticket at www.barbershop-harmony.org, by phone (408) 866-6458 or in the lobby on the day of the event.
