Campbell cleans up for Earth Day

The city of Campbell held its sixth annual Community Cleanup on April 12 at the Los Gatos County Creek Park. The event was held in conjunction with Santa Clara County and San Jose’s Great American Pickup. Over 100 volunteers including students, church and service groups, seniors and families participated in the event.

Caltrans personnel supervised the cleanup along the Camden Avenue on and off ramps along Highway 17, VTA personnel supervised by the railroad tracks adjacent to Winchester Boulevard near Hacienda and city staff supervised the cleaning at Los Gatos County Creek Park and the Los Gatos Creek Trail.

City Council Member Dan Furtado and City Manager Dan Rich participated picking up debris and trash along Highway 17 and the Los Gatos Creek Trail. West San Jose/Campbell Lions President Ed Pansullo recruited several individuals as well as diligently scaled the sides of the creek embankment retrieving a variety of debris including everything from styrofoam packaging materials to an unopened plastic bottle of Grape Gatorade. Other volunteers who came from Campbell, San Jose and Los Gatos to collect cigarette butts, fishing wires, beer cans, disposable diapers and plastic cutlery.

A total of 1,740 pounds of debris and recyclables was collected from the park, railroad tracks, freeway and the creek trail.

Campbell Whole Foods, Starbucks, City’s Pizza and Keep California Beautiful provided donations. The West San Jose/Campbell Kiwanis Club assisted with the assembly and removal of the collected items.
