Veritas Christian Spring football goes undefeated

Veritas defeats Voice to remain unbeaten

By Coach Greg Hardie
Special to the Times

Veritas Christian Academy [VCA] defeated San Francisco’s Voice of Pentecost 13 – 6 on Saturday, May 17 in their last game of the spring season finishing 4 – 0. Combined with VCA’s fall flag football season, the Lions overall record was 7 – 3.

All the right stuff: The Veritas team members included: seniors Chris Wallace #26, Aaron Flores #75, Andrew Marshall #27, juniors Gabriel Flores #16, Adam Flores #24, Sophmore Alex Mankarios #15, eighth graders Garrison Hardie #14, James Young #28, Samuel Flores #8, fifth graders Dawson Hardie #1, Wayne Young #28, Ben Ngaleo #9 with Coach Greg Hardie. Gabriel Flores connected with senior running back Chris Wallace on a 40 yard touchdown catch and run, and Garrison Hardie added the extra point that put VCA ahead to stay.

Voice started the scoring in the first quarter on a three yard run by Philip Gopaul. The extra point attempt failed but Voice led 6 – 0. Veritas answered with a long drive that included a 34 yard pass completion from Flores to Hardie. Chris Wallace finished the drive with a three yard touchdown reception from Flores but Hardie was wide with the extra point leaving the score 6 – 6 at halftime.

Defense dominated the second half as neither team could gain an advantage until mid-way through the fourth quarter when Gabriel Flores intercepted a pass to end a Voice drive. The Lions moved the ball to mid-field when Flores spotted Wallace down field ahead of the defender. Flores put the ball on the money and Wallace outran the defender the rest of the way. Veritas then kicked the ball out of bounds to prevent a long return from the speedy Voice team. Voice was unable to move the ball and turned it over on downs to VCA who proceeded to run out the clock.

“Our guys gave their best effort when their best was needed,” said Lions Coach Greg Hardie. “We played as a team and beat a very fast and talented Voice team who had beaten us during the fall season. It was a perfect way to end the year.”

Way to go!

Westmont High School junior Greg Talley took 1st place with an impressive 6 foot 2 inch high jump at the Blossom Valley Athletic League finals on May 8. “Greg is one of my best jumpers excelling in the high, triple and long jumps,” said Coach Kirk Mansfield. “He’s good for 10 points which is really good. I’m looking forward to seeing what he will do next year.” Talley has been on the varsity team since he was a freshman. Photo courtesy of Talley family
