Justin Hendryx wins San Jose’s falcon naming contest

When Village Elementary School teacher Sherry Stack taught her fifth graders science, Justin Hendryx took a special interest in the peregrine falcons at San Jose’s City Hall.

Hendryx researched the peregrines and watched in awe at the falcon cam on the city’s website. And so when a contest was announced to name the new babies born high atop city hall, he sat down and wrote a winning essay.

“The Miwok Indians lived in this area before the Spanish came so I though Meyye would be a good name,” said Hendryx. “It means bird in Miwok. It’s a great honor to win.”

Hendryx was one of three winners chosen out of 130 entries. They were all given a City of San Jose commendation at city hall.
