American Musical Theatre of San Jose presents a spell-binding version of L. Frank Baum’s beloved “The Wizard of Oz,” at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Featuring a cast of 70, lavish special effects, and vivid pyrotechnics, this timeless presentation brings back all of the favorite songs from the 1939 MGM film, as well as ‘The Jitterbug” which was cut from the original film version. Girls and women, ages 6 to 60, will take to the water at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica for the third annual NorCal Women’s Surf Fest. This day-long event benefits local chapters of the Surfrider Foundation, SurfAid International and the restoration of Pacifica State Beach. The public is invited to the Grand Opening of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens’ $350 million multipurpose park/flood protection project. Opening ceremonies are at 10 a.m. in the Confluence Point area of the park. Six entertainment stages will present a wide variety of music – rock, folk, bluegrass, taiko, Latin/salsa, and traditional bands. Headliners include The Makaha Sons from Hawaii, Trout Fishing in America, and bilingual recording artist Jose-Luis Orozco. In honor of this milestone in Santa Clara Valley history, the first 10,000 park guests will receive commemorative backpacks, a children’s activity book and a 2006 Guadalupe River Park & Gardens wall calendar.
There will also be free caricature portraits by local artists, face painting, popcorn and lemonade, and other souvenir items at individual booths. Take a trip down memory lane at History San Jose’s free Family Day at History Park from noon to 5 p.m. Hosted by the Santa Clara Valley Model T Ford Club, there will be more than 100 antique autos, dating from the turn-of-the-last-century to 1945. Along with the autos, there will be antique fire equipment, antique motorcycles and bicycles, antique boats and early-day gas engines.

LeZotte announces the 5th Annual “Festival in the Park” from 1 – 5 p.m. at San Tomas Park (Castle Park) located on Valerie Drive off San Tomas Aquino Road, south of Campbell Avenue. This is a family-oriented, free community event, featuring live entertainment, children’s games, food and a resource area. This year’s special guests include the Saratoga Taiko Band, Mark Wilson Band, Kafé Mundo, San José Police Department, San José Fire Department, San José Earthquakes and many more. Children’s Musical Theater of San Jose presents “Sleeping Beauty” at the Montgomery Theater. CMT’s youngest performers cast a charm on the audience with a favorite childhood fairytale. This version, commissioned by Prince Street players, is filled with fairies, a funny villainess named Trollarina and few more magical spells than usual. Sleeping Beauty will feature beautiful sets and costumes and a large cast of 6- to 9- year olds, including many making their stage debut as CMT performers. The Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens are collaborating with History San Jose, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium, San Jose Museum of Art, Don Edward’s San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Tech Museum and the Winchester Mystery House to present a full week of unique educational experiences. San Jose Safari Summer Day Camp is designed for children ages 7 – 10 years. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 25 p.m. Learn a wide range of safety tip from local law enforcement, fire safety and much more – fingerprinting and fingerprinting kits will be available. Teddy Bear Picnic at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose: The Bay Area Bears, a Bay Area non-profit, invite you and your fuzzy friends to join them for the Happy Hollow Teddy Bear Picnic from 1 – 2 p.m. Bring a picnic, your blanket and your favorite teddy bear and enjoy a performance by the Bay Area Bears, larger than life costume characters. After the show meet all the critters from the Bay Area Bears. No picnic, no problem, the Kids Café will be open. Santana Row will transform into Little Italy, when the best of Italian cuisine, culture, and entertainment comes alive for the Italian American Heritage Foundation’s 25th Annual Italian Family Festa. This free three-day celebration will give the entire family an opportunity experience the vibrant and rich culture of Italy. Activities include a cultural area with historical photo display, Italian cooking demonstrations, fabulous non-stop entertainment, grape stomping contest and shopping at the many wonderful arts and crafts booths along the row.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 15885 Los Gatos – Almaden Road in Los Gatos, will be hosting a free, fun Safety Awareness Day for children and parents from 10 a.m. to Noon. This event will include child fingerprinting by the San Jose Police Department, as well as safety information for both children and parents from local law enforcement. Children will learn age-appropriate safety tips and techniques, and can explore a fire truck, pet a mounted police horse, jump in the jump house, do face painting, and other fun activities. Turn over those old leaves piling up in your yard this fall into a new compost pile! Master Composter, Phil Cornish, will be offering a comprehensive composting workshop, co-sponsored by Santa Clara County Home Composting Program and Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens. This session will cover topics such as: what can be composted, the various composting methods available, and what to do with finished compost. There will also be information about worm composting, or vermicomposting, and help with choosing which method works best for you. Class session is from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Guadalupe River Park & Gardens Visitor & Education Center, 438 Coleman Avenue in San Jose. The workshop is free, but space is limited. The Sierra Club, Loma Prieta Chapter is sponsoring a free film event! This is a potluck and screening, featuring the documentary “Thirst.” Join us for this exciting opportunity to eat and socialize with other interested activists, as well as learn about the struggle over the privatization of one of our most basic public resources: water. “Thirst” is a groundbreaking new one hour documentary that tells the story of communities stretching from Stockton, CA, to Cochabamba, Bolivia, to Rajasthan, India which are resisting privatization of their water in order to preserve water as a public trust. The screening will be held from 6-9 p.m. at the Vineland Branch Library, 1450 Blossom Hill Rd in San Jose.
