Barbershop Harmony Convention at the Civic Auditorium: Voices in Harmony Chorus is hosting this year’s annual Far Western District Contest and Convention. 27 Quartets and 25 Choruses will compete for the top awards, the winners receiving an invitation to the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Convention in July, 2007. Branham High School's Battle of the Bands: Teen bands battle for top honors in this outdoor rock concert party. Judging panel consists of local musicians and a talent scout with prizes for the top 3 bands. Interested bands contact Bill@BranhamMusic.com.  Bands must fill out an entry form with $15 band entry fee.  All bands must have at least one band member as a current CUHSD student.  Advance tickets on sale at www.BranhamMusic.com thru Branham's PayPaw for $8 plus transaction fee or $10 at the door, per availability.  This event is expected to sell out. Boyz II Men at the Campbell Heritage Theater: Introduced by Bell Biv Devoe’s Michael Bivins through Motown Records in 1991, this Philadelphia high school vocal group sky-rocketed to one of the most successful R&B vocal sensations in the early 90s. Characterized by their multiple lead arrangements and rich harmonies, Boyz II Men topped the charts with hits “One Sweet Day,”“Ill Make Love to You,” and “End of the Road.” Performing one night only. Saratoga Drama Group presents “Bye, Bye Birdie” at the Saratoga Civic Theatre, 13777 Fruitvale Avenue in Saratoga. Considered on of the captivating musicals of modern times, “Bye, Bye Birdie” follows rock heartthrob Conrad Birdie on the verge of his induction into the Army. When his publicity-minded agent decides to send Birdie off with a kiss from a member of his fan club – on the Ed Sullivan show – things begin to go awry. Classic songs from the production include “What Did I Ever See In Him?”, “Spanish Rose” and “Kids.” For tickets and information, call 266-4734. October 1 – 31
Monsieur Beans of Willow Glen, 1383 Lincoln Avenue in San Jose, presents an art exhibit of original paintings by Pauline J. Jensen. This showing will features 20 works including “Glass Walkways – Halfmoon Bay” and “Dreams of Travel” (water color) and “People of Korea.” (oil) An artist’s reception will be held on October 8 from 2 – 5 p.m. refreshments will be served.

“Art by the Pound” brings animal and art lovers under one roof, featuring animals available for adoption from Humane Society Silicon Valley and animal inspired artwork from Santa Clara artist Sonya Paz. The event hours are from 1 pm - 6 pm both days at the Sonya Paz Fine Art Gallery (www.sonyapaz.com), 1793 Lafayette Street, Suite 110, in Santa Clara. A percentage of the proceeds will directly benefit the shelter animals. The special exhibit will continue through October 22.

San Jose Arts Festival at the San José McEnery Convention Center: This event features 170 exhibitors offering more than 10,000 original works for sale in all price ranges. Festival visitors have the opportunity to meet and talk with the artists and craftspeople about how they make their unique items. Admission is $6.50 - $7.50. St. Lucy Parish, 2350 Winchester Blvd. in Campbell, presents its 20th annual Family, Food & FunFest. Event hours are: Oct. 6 from 4pm-11pm; Oct. 7 from 11am-10pm; and Oct. 8 from 11am-6pm. This year's festival features carnival rides and games for all ages, a variety of great food booths — including beer and wine — and lots of free entertainment, including live music for every taste and a magician on Sunday at 1 p.m. A silent auction will be held throughout the weekend in the school gym. On Sunday, the grand prize raffle ticket will be drawn, with the winner taking home $5,000. Tickets are available for $1.00 each or $10 for a booklet of 12. Tickets may be purchased at the school or rectory. They can also be purchased at the FunFest itself.

Scarecrow-Making Workshop: Gather ‘round for this wonderful opportunity to spend time with friends/family and let your collective creativity flow! Additionally, all scarecrows will be invited to participate in the Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens’ sponsored Scarecrow Contest at Pumpkins in the Park on Saturday, October 14.  The workshop will be held at the new Guadalupe River Park & Gardens Visitor & Education Center, 438 Coleman Avenue in San Jose. One scarecrow allowed per group.  Scarecrow building materials are included in the workshop fee. Children under eighteen years old must be accompanied by an adult. St. Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church will host its 4th Annual Book and Bake Sale Fundraiser event. Hours are: 10/13 noon – 4 p.m., 10/14 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on 10/15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be thousands of books to choose from in all categories. International Gift Faire: Fairly-traded folk art and handicrafts from Ten Thousand Villages, a non-profit job creation and marketing program for artisans in 30 developing countries. Teens can vote for their favorite new teen books during Teen Read Week at the Campbell Public Library and be entered into a prize drawing.  A display of the nominated books and voting forms will be in the Teen Section of the library.  Teens can also vote online. This year’s Teen Read Week theme is “Get Active @ your Library”. Some of this year’s nominees for the 2006 Teens’ Top Ten Books include Captain Hook: the adventures of a notorious youth, Harry Potter and the half-blood prince, Twilight, and Heavy metal and you. The new exhibit, “Dragons and Fairies: Exploring Viet Nam Through Folktales,” opens at the Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose. “Dragons and Fairies” is designed to educate children ages 5-12 about the rich cultural heritage of the Vietnamese people. It provides an opportunity to explore the lives and traditions of people living in modern and ancient Viet Nam. The Children’s Discover Museum is located at 180 Woz Way, in downtown San Jose, at the intersection of Woz Way and Auzerais Street. Hours are Tuesday–Saturday: 10 a.m. -5 p.m.; Sunday: noon-5 p.m. Member’s only hour is Sunday 11 a.m. – noon.

October 27 – Friday
The Campbell Historical Museum, 51 North Central Avenue in Campbell, will offer its 4th annual “Spooky Halloween Night” evening of fun and recreation of old-fashioned Halloween games and activities from the 1920s and 30s. The event, designed for families, will include hot cider, apples to dunk, candy and treats for the youngsters, plus games and activities like “touch-feely” boxes and making trick-or-treat bags to prepare the children for the big Halloween night. The location has changed this year because of the closure of the Ainsley House due to the roofing project. Admission $5 per person; and children under 2 free. St. Frances Cabrini Holiday Boutique: The 36th Annual Holiday Boutique, held in the Parish Hall, 15333 Woodard in San Jose, will feature handcrafted specialties and holiday items by local artisans, a kid’s craft area, Santa pictures, Carolers, baked goods, raffle, and breakfast/lunch. Admission is free. Hours are 11/4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on 11/5 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Tai Chi Chuan Classes: Classes meet on Wednesdays, from 11:30-12:30 p.m. for Beginners; 12:30-1:30 p.m. for Intermediate. All sessions held at the Los Gatos Recreation Center, 123 E. Beginning October 1
The Oakland Cloud Dusters and the City of San Jose is sponsoring an Indoor Model Airplane Building Class. Designed for ages 10 and up, participants will learn to build, adjust and fly light-weight; free-flying, rubber powered indoor model airplanes under the supervision of experts.  Eight weekly classes begin on October 1, from 3-5 p.m. in the Moreland Community Center Gym, 1850 Fallbrook Avenue, San Jose.  For fee and registration information call 249-6580.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) in cooperation with Stanford University and Willows Senior Center in San Jose is sponsoring a two-week workshop, “Arthritis Quick Start Workshop and Study.” Attendees will learn about pain management, arthritis medications, and the latest in exercise. In addition, workshop sponsors will help participants design and carry out individualized self-management programs. Free workshop courses are from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., pre-registration is required and enrollment is limited. AARP Information Center needs volunteers to staff their office. Duties include helping seniors find various services and programs, and providing information on senior needs. Pet Blessing: Come have your pets blessed, at St. Stephen's in-the-fields Episcopal Church. The City of Campbell will be having its fifth annual city wide garage sale, “Campbell on Sale” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is coordinated by the City of Campbell and over 250 households have registered to date! Project HIRED will hold its annual “Harvest Moon Gala” at Villa Ragusa in Campbell.  The annual fundraiser benefits Project HIRED, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting individuals with disabilities to gain competitive employment and advance their careers, through partnerships with industry. The reception begins at 6 p.m. and the silent auction runs through 7:45 p.m. Emcee Jamie Williams, former 49er’s tight end, will regale the audience with stories of his playing years and how a team made up of people with a wide range of abilities is always a winning team. “Tables of Champions” for ten people can be purchased for $1,500.  Individual tickets are available at $150 each.
