Where were you when the earthquake struck last week? Do you worry living in California about earthquakes?

(Asked at Orchard Valley Coffee)

“I was in my living room just putting in a DVD in my home theater. I thought it had some really great sound, but then when my cat came running and hid under the dining room table I thought oh, my gosh. When is this going to stop? It was the longest earthquake since the big one. I’m a native so I’m used to it.”

“I heard it, but I stayed on the computer until my wife yelled at me. I thought it had to be over a 5-magnitude though. The earthquakes are no big deal and they don’t bother me. We live in a very old house and it’s still standing.”

Don Kaufman, 52

“I was working at Togo’s when the quake happened. Actually I was amazed because I had been expecting an earthquake soon because we hadn’t had one in awhile. I don’t worry about them. It seems people really come together when there’s a disaster like a tsunami or earthquake. There’s a sense of community.”

“I was driving on the road, so I didn’t feel a thing. I was born in California and I’m used to the quakes. I was in Los Angeles during the earthquakes and here in 1989. It’s a fun ride.”

“I was at home but it was no big surprise. This is California. I was a little worried when it lasted a longer than usual. I’m an insurance agent so there were some calls from people.”

John Striegel, 51

“I was watching TV. There was a lot of shaking but it was over. There wasn’t time to process if I should react and get under a doorway. It was over by then. This wasn’t bad; the Loma Prieta was the worst.”

“Well, it’s a big deal on the news. That’s all they had on the TV every 15 minutes. My dogs, Milo and Izzie went crazy, running around and barking. There’s was another quake yesterday. This is California.”

“My family was all together sitting at dinner having a family reunion. We thought the earth was rolling because it had been so long since we were together. I was here in ’89. It’s beautiful here even if the earth shakes every once in awhile.”
