Castlemont’s Student Council recently raised $1589.23 for Hurricane Katrina survivors by collecting coins.
According to Castle-mont teachers Cathy Nor-man and Judy McGettigan (who lead Student Coun-cil), the Katrina fundraiser lasted about a month. Students brought in loose change and dollar bills. The students themselves sorted and rolled about $800 of coins. The student council representatives gave up several of their lunches over a six-week period to get all of the rolling done.
A former Castelmont parent, Kay Miller, who works for the Red Cross, collected the money and presented the school with a special certificate of recognition, which is now hanging proudly on display in the office.
