Veritas stuns Patten Academy
The Veritas Christian Academy [VCA] Lions came into their last regular season game 1-6 on the season and in last place in the BACAL league flag football standings. Patten Academy out of Oakland came into the game undefeated [for two years] and current league champion. VCA came out strong and shocked the visiting Bulldogs 42-26 with an upset victory that can only be rivaled by Stanford’s defeat of USC last year after being a 40-point underdog. Patten had defeated Veritas 58-21 earlier this season.
The Lions started the scoring on their initial drive ending in James Young’s 38-yard touchdown reception from Garrison Hardie. Hardie added the extra point making the score 7-0. Later that quarter, after a Hardie interception, Young and Hardie connected again on a 23-yard touchdown pass. Patten answered quickly returning the kickoff 46 yards for a touchdown. On the Lions’ next possession, Young took a handoff and sprinted down the left sideline for a 29-yard touchdown run. Patten scored once more before halftime on a 12-yard pass but their two-point conversion failed. VCA led at halftime 21-12.
Patten opened the scoring in the third quarter on a screen pass that resulted in a 35-yard touchdown. They added a 2-point conversion cutting the Veritas lead to 21-20. After the kickoff, VCA responded with a five-play drive that included a 39-yard pass from Hardie to Young. Two plays later, Hardie found Jonah Park in the right corner of the end zone from five yards out to extend the Lions lead to 28-20. Patten came right back and scored on a 19-yard pass but the two-point conversion failed making the score 28-26 late in the third quarter. Veritas had their next drive come to fourth down on their own 33 yard line but rather then risk a long punt return by the speedy Bulldogs, the Lions decided to go for it on fourth and eight. Samuel Flores threw a backwards screen pass to Garrison Hardie who then looked to throw the ball down field. Not finding anyone open, he weaved through the Patten defenders for 47 yards and a touchdown that gave VCA a 35-26 lead at the end of the third quarter. Hardie then intercepted a Patten pass and returned it 16 yards to the Patten 26 yard line. From that point, the Lions moved the ball to the Patten 5 yard line where James Young ran the ball into the left corner of the end zone, scoring his fourth touchdown of the day and giving Veritas the winning margin of 42-26.
“Our guys played a near perfect game,” said Coach Greg Hardie. “We made key plays that kept the momentum in our favor and we gained confidence the longer we held the lead. This is one of those games that show why you don’t play games on paper because Patten is a very talented team. I’m so proud of our players for the all-out effort they gave throughout the game.”
